Stylish Industrial Stools
The Montreuil based firm Établissements Nicolle were specialists in the manufacture of metal washers. In 1933, they designed a stool for their workshop and some of the neighbouring factories. The metal Nicolle stool had a washer-shaped seat and three legs. Before long, a backrest was added together with a fourth leg to increase the stool’s stability; and then the stools were also made stackable. Soon, the stool was available in eight different heights and could be found in factories across France. The rest, as they say, is history. With its “swan neck” and “whale tail” shaped backrest, the Nicolle chair is an icon of industrial design. It is the perfect height for breakfast bars and kitchen counters, sturdy and comfortable. And we just love the deep red colour of this version from The Conran Shop – it’s the very red that you will often see used on the woodwork and metalwork of warehouse conversions.
