What do you specialise in? And what do you look for when sourcing pieces?

Mayfly Vintage specialises in an eclectic mix of original 20th century vintage furniture, lighting and homewares. In particular, French, industrial and reclaimed rustic styles. We have built a reputation for having quality original items. We particularly seek one-off pieces in good solid condition and are always looking for something which is extra special.

What items continue to prove popular with your customers?

Industrial lights are still very popular as they look fabulous in a home environment or in shops or restaurants. Traditional wooden benches are sought after too as they are so practical in the home.

Have there ever been any unusual requests?

Nothing really unusual yet! However, we did have one recent request to source a large number of vintage French wicker trolleys on wheels which have been used in a new Disney film.

Do you have any advice for sourcing vintage furnishing and accessories? And how to take care of them?

If you are going to an antiques fair, fleamarket or boot fair get there as early as possible as the early bird always catches the worm. Buy what you like rather than following trends and buy items which you would be happy to have in your own home. It seems to work for us. Many vintage items are worn and show signs of wear and tear this is what makes them special and unique.

You’ve just opened a new showroom in Hampshire! Tell us a little about the space.

After the continued success of our online shop, which went live in 2014, we have recently opened a 3,000 sq ft showroom in a beautiful eighteenth century flint farm building. It has five large rooms full of vintage French, industrial, country house and old school decorative furniture, lighting and homewares. It is located just outside the pretty town of Stockbridge in Hampshire which sits on the banks of the River Test and the beautiful cathedral city of Winchester. It is also just over an hour away from South London.

What’s next for Mayfly Vintage? Is there anything we should know about?

The new showroom is keeping us busy at the moment and the regular buying trips to keep it stocked up! We will be expanding our range of vintage items and working more with interior designers and stylists. Watch this space…
