Globe Wharf is the building that first inspired Warehouse Home, so we are thrilled to have the opportunity to include one of its finest apartments in our property portfolio.
Globe Wharf is a grade II listed former granary believed to have been built in around 1883. Originally a rice warehouse, it narrowly escaped destruction during the Blitz when whole swathes of Rotherhithe were completely destroyed. Between 1996 and 1999, Globe Wharf was sensitively converted into 138 apartments, retaining original features throughout. Located on the fifth floor, with lift access, this 2,000 square foot apartment is set over four levels and is the epitome of warehouse living. Globe Wharf enjoys a Thameside location and this river-facing apartment has a balcony but also two sizeable dual terraces with space for a dining table, barbeque and sun loungers and offering breathtaking views of London's skyline. A red crane, mounted to the front of the warehouse, is a dramatic feature beside one of the terraces. The converted rooftop tower (or 'elevation housing') is one of the apartment's defining features and highly prized due to its uniqueness. Accessed via a metal staircase, reflecting the shipbuilding past of Rotherhithe, it features a beautiful bedroom on its first floor and a home office on the second; both offer panoramic views of London, including the Shard to the west and Canary Wharf to the east. The current owners have invested significantly in the property. A reclaimed timber floor in the living area, dark grey marble installed in the bathrooms and entrance hall and a striking contemporary oak and glass staircase all complement the property's exposed brickwork and timber beams. The apartment has a versatile configuration and is ideal for entertaining. The open-plan stainless steel custom-made Gaggenau kitchen boasts large amounts of storage and an extensive run of Subzero wine fridges with space for over 200 bottles. A contemporary fireplace set-up is the focal point of the living area, cleverly intergrating a television for cosy nights in with a box set. In addition, underfloor heating, Lutron lighting and an integrated speaker system, add to the comfort of the property. Upstairs, the master bedroom is filled with natural light and leads through to a double dressing area and large bathroom with matching his and hers showers, basins and toilets and an enormous shared bath.
Globe Wharf is situated just a 15 minute walk from Canada Water for the Jubilee line (one stop to Canary Wharf) and a 25 minute riverside walk from Tower Bridge, the Tower of London and historic Shad Thames. It is also just a 7-minute walk from Rotherhithe old village, for the overground (for direct travel to Shoreditch or a quick way into Bank and Liverpool Street) and one of London's oldest pubs, the Mayflower. Canary Wharf, on the other side of the water, can also be reached by river taxi in less than 10 minutes. The building has a well-equipped gym and concierge service. Residents also have access to the leisure centre with swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna, located in the adjacent building. The apartment comes with 3 secure underground parking spaces.
“This is a wonderful, unique home which has been a joy to decorate and to live in. It has taught us a lot about conservation and the power of retaining heritage elements. Some of the old timbers still display the inscriptions made when they were first installed and we chose to highlight the steel columns and nuts and bolts using a vibrant red originally used in the building."
