Modern Rustic by interiors stylist Emily Henson is a beautiful coffee table book showcasing the very best of a style that “celebrates the fabric of a home”. Modern rustic is a look characterised by wood, stone, steel, natural materials and rich textures, of interiors “laid elegantly bare”. Henson shares tips and inspiration for achieving a “back-to-basics style” that is bang up to date, with images of inspirational homes from around the world. She defines different versions of the look too. ‘Pure Rustic’ typically incorporates cleaner lines, calming tones and muted shades of white, grey, charcoal. ‘ Bohemian Rustic’ combines textures and patterns with richer colours for a warmer, laid-back look. ‘Pop Rustic’ teams raw materials with splashes of neon and bold contemporary touches. Finally, ‘Retro Rustic’ works in some “heavyweight materials” and, as the name suggests, retro pieces and vintage artworks. Henson guides us through each interpretation of Modern Rustic in turn and then shares the ‘Details’ that will help recreate the look in your own home, touching on textures, textiles, lighting, rescued and recycled and more. Finally, she demonstrates how Modern Rustic can be channeled throughout your home and in every room.
Homes featured in Modern Rustic range from a Norwegian mountain cabin to an American ranch house, and from country cottages to modern apartments. There is so much inspiration to be drawn from the ways in which modern rustic has been channeled in every home. There is an honesty, integrity and unpretentiousness to the Modern Rustic style that we particularly love. And we’re sure you will savour every page of this book, just as we have.

In this California home (below), the owners have used reclaimed timber from four different barns to clad the full length of the landing as well as the ceiling. The range of woods, sizes and finishes creates an incredible patch work effect, which is beautifully offset by the dark-stained floor. Our tip: an easy way to create a similar effect on your walls is with a remarkably realistic Scrapwood Wallpaper by Piet Hein Eek from BODIE and FOU. And if you like the vintage bus blind hanging above the stairs, you can find similar ones from Pedlars.
In this Norwegian ski chalet (below), the kitchen units have been fashioned from reclaimed wood. Stainless steel appliances, a tiled floor and concrete work surfaces keep the look simple, rustic, fuss-free and stylish. Our tip: for hand-made reclaimed timber kitchen units, visit Trunk Reclaimed. And if that bare bulb pendant appeals, head over to Skandium – the E27 pendant lamp by Muuto is available in white as well as a variety of other colours.
Rustic wooden beams and posts frame the seating area in this living room perfectly and they contrast beautifully with the flagstone flooring and contemporary grey colour-scheme of this beautiful living room. Our tip: for a similar sofa and armchairs, take a look at the styles and fabrics at Sofa.com or George Smith.
