Design Ideas from Blixen, Spitalfields
We can’t wait to visit Blixen, a modern European-style brasserie that has just opened its doors to the hungry public. Located in a former bank in Old Spitalfields Market, the Blixen’s lofty ceilings and arched windows with huge metal fanlights create a light and airy space. The old bank’s foyer has been transformed with an open kitchen and horseshoe booths, and the underground vault is now a bar and private dining area. A ceiling of reclaimed wooden floorboards contrast with exposed whitewashed brick work on the walls, adding an element of refined industrial chic to the interior. Equally beautiful is the Art Deco-inspired ceiling light that dominates the room.
Blixen is co-owned by Clive Watson, founder of Village London, who also counts The Garrison and Riding House cafe amongst his credentials, and it promises to deliver something for everyone. You can visit as a morning pit-stop for coffee, or soak up the ambience with a late lunch of creative International cuisine – from frogs legs to crumbled ox tongue. Dine solo at a timber stool in front of the huge open bar, or settle in for cocktails with friends down in the vaults.
We like the juxtaposition of exposed whitewashed brick walls with tan leather booths and dark wooden furniture. A flourish of greenery adds homeliness. And we badly want to take these reclaimed wood, leather and linen bar stools home with us!

Tan leather surfaces compliment white walls and wooden furniture perfectly. We love this swivelling barstool design from Alexander and Pearl. It has a strong “gentleman’s club” look, enhanced by the brass stud detailing.
